A gift from Mr. Bigge

In search of the drinking fountains of Torquay.

This one is in a little triangle of land in Chelston. It was given by Mr and Mrs Bigge , who  lived in a mansion called Hennapyn.
Francis Bigge was born in Northumberland in 1820. He trained as a naval officer but left the Navy and travelled to Australia. He made a fortune from sheep raising and horse rearing, and returned to England, retiring to Torquay  in 1873, living in a mansion by the name of Hennapyn. He was president of the Torquay branch of the London and provincial antivivisection society. He and his wife were also two of the three benefactors of the horse trough at Cockington. At the base there is a trefoil pattern creating a dogs drinking bowl. The spout is formed from a swan necked pipe terminating in a greyhound or dragon’s head and amazingly has survived.
I didn’t stop for a drink
