Shale trail

Have you walked along the Shale Trail?

I explored just a small part of it today, starting from West Calder, and I loved that you can learn more about the trail's history from various points along the way.

For instance, did you know “Buried under the shale” refers to a victorian house that was buried intact from the waste from Westwood oil works?

Or that “A Village Lost” is about the villages of Gavieside and Mossend which were demolished all because the company that owned the houses there refused to build toilet facilities at them as requested by the council who they were going to hand them over to!
