Black Billy
Black Billy (or King Billy) Lynch was a respected local Gundungurra elder in the Megalong and Kanimbla valleys in the late 1800s working in the mines.
This is Black Billy Head on Narrow Neck just south of our farm and it shows Billy in profile, even showing his extravagant beard. The real Billy is in the extra.
Of course, the name Black Billy Head is controversial (and worse) with some, mainly white Anglo Australians who claim the right to rewrite history. I’ve lived in this area for 40 years and all the current aboriginal elders are old clients of mine - they agree with me that Billy would be a proud old elder to think he’s still remembered, let alone his likeness permanently fixed in stone. To rename the headland would be an insult to his memory!
