We listened in to the Good Friday service in Ripon. The backdrop is the town hall, topped with a Ukrainian flag. Just underneath is a corruption of Psalm 127 v1, replacing “watchman” with “Wakeman”. The Ripon Wakeman was an employed city guard, the Hornblower, announcing each evening that the watch was set. The Hornblower ceremony has been taking place, daily, for about 1200 years and the verse is an acknowledgement that however well-guarded you feel you might be, there’s a greater security needed.
