DIY roadworks

Months of rain have been followed by a few fine days so it’s time to do some road repairs around the farm, just a bit of patching for now.
Two pieces of equipment are required, a tractor and a shovel. I’ve been driving tractors for over 50 years and my tractor skills have grown progressively over that time. Conversely, my shovel skills have diminished to the point where I’m nearly useless. Can anybody explain this phenomenon? Maybe isbi can offer some ideas over dinner tonight.
