Back home safely!
Thank you to everyone for your concern and very kind thoughts regarding my husband and the Boston Marathon. Thankfully my husband had finished the marathon before the bombs went off and had already walked back to the hotel to get ready for his flight home. I spoke to him as he finished the marathon (3hrs 24 mins) but then when I heard about the bombs I did not manage to contact him again for about 4 hours - 4 hours of a steadily building tension and concern as we sat at home worrying that he had come to some harm.
He had gone with some other runners to the spa facilities near the hotel to relax their aching legs in a hammam (like a sauna and steam room combined). That and the shutting down of the network meant no communication. When he emerged later he was oblivious to what had transpired, and as he saw the chaos around him he could hardly believe it. One runner in the hotel finished one minute before the first bomb went off....a case where speed did matter.
The bombings were so senseless and cruel, a day when families were out celebrating Patriots Day and enjoying the spring weather watching the marathon. As far as I know it seems that it was mainly spectators who were injured, and of course the poor innocent 8 year old boy who lost his life just breaks my heart.
The flights were cancelled but then later they announced that flights were resumed, so thankfully my husband was able to fly home. So here he is with our two older boys (last day of the school holidays for them) - everyone smiling and happy to be safe and together.
