Knockomagh- the summit!
I know a lake where cool waves break,
And softly fall on a sylvan sand,
And no steps intrude on that solitude,
And no voice save mine disturbs the strand.
Lough Ine, Fitz James O’Brien (1826-62)
A gorgeous day, I wanted to see swathes of bluebells. Walk round the garden Himself advised! Well yes, but I wanted a bit of an adventure too. We nipped off to Lough Ine - also spelt Hyne and Oighin - a unique seawater lough connected to the Atlantic by a skinny channel known as the Rapids. It's also Ireland;s only Marine Conservation area. We decided to do the route up Knockomagh Hill where I reckoned there would be bluebells, 2km UP - mainly straight up! It was pretty aerobic and there were bluebells. It's worth gasping for the view from the top is mighty. There's the lake, beyond is the sea and one of the islands in the middle is called Castle Island where King Labra Loinseach lived, he who had asses ears like King Midas. It was pretty busy as it's still the Easter hols but enough space for everyone. There are also two holy wells so what's not to love!
