Spinning Ball
The Sun rotates but because it is a ball of gas it does so differentially, much faster at its equator decreasing towards its poles. This twists up the magnetic field and is responsible for sunspots developing.
The spots are still very crackly and major flares are very likely whilst they are facing our way.
The photo looks patchy because of the thin, hazy cloud I've had today.
