Road (Alley) names

I have seen this sign many times as I drive to the river, but today was the day I stopped to photograph it. 
A quick search of Google didn't identify any history other than an Estate Agent in Surbiton giving details of house prices in Fire Bell Mews and The Bell House. I would imagine a very old fire station was located there, although there is one almost across the road. The two sites must be connected.
