Eilean Dearg

This is Eilean Dearg (Red Island) which lies close to the east shore of Loch Riddon.

It is difficult to believe that such a tiny spot once held a castle, destroyed in 1685  by naval action  in  what is called Argyll's Rising.    

Today it is hard to get a picture of it , so wooded have the shores of the loch become.   Even a century ago there would have been much less growth, the timber having gone over many generations to (amongst other purposes)   build the ships that , at one time, did the damage here.
