Spring has arrived
Last week I said that blossom had not yet appeared on the trees in the town. What a difference there was today when I took my camera out for a walk. These shots were taken within 100 - 200 yards of my home. Although I grew up in Lanarkshire and moved here after getting married,
I consider myself fortunate to live in Scotland's first New Town, built in 1947. The original village had a population of 3,000, which grew enormously, populated mostly by families from urban areas in Glasgow where the sanitary conditions were sadly lacking for families living in a post -war Scotland. Now the town has around 75,000 inhabitants. It doesn't feel crowded, as the original sections of the town were well spaced out with lots of green areas separating the different communities. The new building that has taken place in the past 20 to 30 years has expanded the town outwards into the surrounding farmland and the open green areas have remained in the original town; whereas new builds are more restricted in the amount of green areas they have. One big problem in the town is parking - no-one could have envisaged that nearly every house would have at least one car and cars are parked nose to tail in many of the original streets. I think there may be only four, quite compact high-rise blocks of flats in the town. I felt especially grateful for living here during the lockdowns we had, as at least we had a feeling of spaciousness when we went out for our daily walk, although after three months we would drive to open areas outside of the town in order to see something other than houses. The town does have its problems, as like other main towns, there is now a lack of local shops due to very large shopping centres being built a bit further out in the countryside - fine if you have a car.
