Hardy Monument

The wedding celebrations came to an end today and after a really lovely time we all made our way home. I took a detour to visit the Hardy Monument.
It is a 72 feet high monument on the summit of Black Down in Dorset, erected in 1844 by public subscription in memory of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, flag captain of Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Hardy lived in the area and his family chose the site for a monument which could be used as a landmark for shipping. The monument has been shown on navigational charts since 1846 and can be seen from a distance of 60 miles.
