Half light
It was only when I awoke that I knew I'd been asleep.
My sleep must have been so deep and dreamless that I hadn't even been aware of the transition from waking to sleeping.
At first I couldn't work out what had woken me - but then I heard it: a creak from the floor on the landing. The sound of soft footsteps heading towards the door.
I held my breath as I heard a slight click from the door handle, then let it out again as after a moment, the footsteps headed away.

While I won't pretend I hadn't felt a flutter of anticipation, on the whole I couldn't help thinking life was crazy enough right now. Adding more complications didn't seem like a good idea.
In the soft grey light creeping through the curtains, sleep was a lot harder to find than before.
