An unusual Matisse: The Attic Studio

This little Vuilliard-like early Matisse is part of the marvelous three-room exhibit called “The Red Studio” that has just opened at MOMA. The first and largest room is devoted to the eponymous painting (owned by MOMA) along with all the other Matisse paintings and sculptures that are portrayed in “The Red Studio.” This tiny gem comes from the middle room, which is about Matisse’s related work and aspects of his life. The third room covers the history of “The Red Studio” (it was rejected by the patron who commissioned it), from its origins to its acquisition by MOMA in 1949.

“The Attic Studio” normally resides at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Those of you who live in or near Cambridge (this means you, Martin!) can see it in situ when it goes home.
