SE&CR

I pulled into the car park at Staplehurst railway station to try to find some blip fodder. As I went through the entrance I spotted this on the gate.

The South Eastern & Chatham Railway was formed in 1899 when two railway companies merged; South Eastern Railways and London, Chatham and Dover Railway. They had been bitter competitors and this competion led to many towns having two railway stations and Kent services serving a handful of London termini. They also owned the docks at Dover and Folkestone and a large fleet of ships.

Under the Railways Act (1921) SE&CR became part of Southern Railway in 1923. So these gates are nearly 100 years old
