Old Sewage Valve House, Girdleness Head

Its been a strange day weather wise.
Fairly grey most of the day,
but low grey cloud suddenly cleared and sun broke through about 7.00.
We then had 45 minutes of dramatic light only for the rain to roll in
and wind to increase.
The old sewage pumping station at Girdleness.
Dating from Victorian times, now replaced by a modern installation nearby at the head of Nigg Bay. Even very utilitarian buildings such as this,
were handsomely constructed in the golden age of granite some 110 years ago.
It had a capacity of 81 million gallons per day
and a system of valves ensured that were no blow backs from raging seas.
The jetty I have often photographed from and which is mainly submerged is actually the casing of the outlet pipe.
The new outflow from the new station runs way offshore
as this system encouraged effluent to wash back on the beach
when Aberdeen grew in size.
