Fuel storage tanks
The special fuels were stored in these tanks prior to fuelling the vehicles. They now appear to be empty. It is not known whether they were ever properly decontaminated: the available records have substantial missing sections. This may seem unsurprising as many records were officially destroyed: both by the government after the liquidation of the programme and by those few surviving staff. Rumours persist that the staff did not, in fact, destroy the records but rather secreted them for some unknown future purpose (what dark purposes such knowledge could serve do not bear thinking of) This has been denied, even under enhanced interrogation, by survivors, but the rumours of a hidden record department still active to this day still circulate. Even so, the omissions in the records of the decommissioning of the fuel production facility are curiously specific.
Not having appropriate protective gear I did not investigate other than some rather cursory radiation measurements which were not exceptional: it should be possible for unprotected humans to survive here for weeks or months.
Still the strange cries and scuttling movement, glimpsed in peripheral vision. I fired a few rounds at something half-seen, but to no obvious effect.
