West Bay looking to East Cliff

I was out with the local Geology group today.  The first of the summer outings.  We started in Charmouth where the rocks date from the early part of the Jurassic period.  We headed for the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre for a talk by two of the staff before examining the extensive display of local fossils including Dinosaurs, fish, ammonites, plants including several very rare fossils.  We then had a quick walk along the beach looking for some ourselves.  The next stop was West Bay with younger Jurassic rocks.  They are a very imposing sight and fall away almost vertically.  Some of you will recognise these from the TV programme Broadchurch.  There are frequent dangerous cliff falls here with one person loosing their life relatively recently.  Its surprising how close people sit to the cliffs even now.  The extra shows this.  We spent sometime here wandering around the village with its small harbour before a short walk along the cliffs close to the sea edge.  Given the rather cloudy weather forecast for today we were lucky to have a fairly sunny and warm day.  A good and interesting day out.

I managed to get back home just in time to have a cup of tea and change for the evening Zumba class.
