Train spotters

Doncaster is crawling with them today, which led to the following conversation with an American passenger as we passed through:

Him: What are those guys doing?

Me: They are train spotters.

Him: What does that mean?

Me: They write down the numbers of the trains

Him (incredulous): Why???
