Castlefield Basin
Castlefield Basin is where the Rochdale Canal and the Bridgewater Canal meet. It's in the centre of Manchester and was the UK's first designated Urban Heritage Park. Considering its location it is remarkably nice and peaceful.
My Blip looks along the Bridgewater Canal and shows the very modern (and ugly) Beetham Tower. It's 555ft (169m) high, has a total of 47 floors and is home to the Manchester Hilton Hotel, 219 luxury apartments and 16 penthouses.
The red brick building below it is the old Castlefield Congregational Chapel (Grade II, built in 1858). It was converted into a sound recording studio in the 1980s and owned by Pete Waterman (best known for Stock Aitken Waterman). Rick Astley recorded 'Never Gonna Give You Up' here.
It was sold in 2006 and has since been converted to offices.
