Croft on the Isle of Eigg
A very misty day on Eigg, cloud down to 50m above sea level. Went for a walk up the Sgurr of Eigg, but didn't see any views , though did see a Sea Eagle, a Wheatear, a Stonechat and Lapwings, as well as hearing a cuckoo.
Today's blip is is a house at Grulin, an abandoned settlement at the SW side of the Island,
The extra is the inside of a cave, Uamh Fhraing (Francis' Cave). This is associated with an infamous episode in Scottish history when a feud erupted between the MacDonalds of Eigg and the MacLeods of Skye in the 16th century. Some Macleods got stuck on a small island off Eigg after a storm and stole some cattle from the Eigg MacDonalds (as well as committing some other atrocities, the story goes). So the MacDonalds cast them off in boats without oars and they perished. The MacLeods sent men to Eigg for retribution, but the Eigg islanders got word of their impending arrival and hid in a cave, the Cave of Francis. This is a large cave with a tiny entrance about 3' high that you have to crawl through, but once inside it is quite roomy and goes in a few hundred feet (the extra is a view of the entrance from inside the cave). 400 islanders hid in the cave for three days, but the MacLeods found it and lit a fire at the entrance that suffocated everyone in the cave, almost the entire population of the island. This was in 1577 and the cave is now known as the Massacre Cave.
