St Peter and St Paul, Menmenham

I was working in Medmenham today which is a pretty village in Buckinghamshire but it has the very busy A4155 cutting right through it.

The Parish Church sits below the level of this road and on the opposite side is the Dog and Badger Pub. Ferry Lane, adjacent to the Church, runs down to the River Thames.

This is a picture of one of the very old headstones, so old majority of the inscription has worn away but I believe it is an infants grave, and I thought this angel look so pretty.....just how angels should look!

The current church dates from the 12th century with the tower and chancel from late 14th century. The Church was not open today so I did not get to look around but it does have the most lovely oak porch!

Nearby the remains of a Cistercian abbey closed by Henry VIII lies close to the river and has been incorporated into a Jacobean mansion. This was remodelled in the 18th century by Medmenham's most notorious resident, Sir Francis Dashwood, and the meetings of the Hell Fire Club were held there until the discreditable nature of these was exposed.
