Am I getting my photo taken?

If ever working with a theodolite where members of the public were passing by, the surveyor would often be asked whether the passer by had just had their photo taken.
If they (the passer by) looked remotely interested I would explain that while there was a lens resembling that of a camera it was for sighting targets or points and recording the vertical and horizontal angle to said target. Come early 80s we had electronic distance measurement  (EDM) built into the device capable of measuring co-axially distance to said target too.
Bang up to date, modern instruments do indeed have cameras built in and with some clever software, images from known points can be digitised and on the PC and you can measure features on the screen and, say, measure a window width from the photograph. My appearance in this image is the result of a bit of pilot error where I started the instrument rolling before getting out of the way.
