This year's baby coots have hatched in Victoria Park. The life of a coot chick is surprisingly brutal. Apparently, parent coots pick a favourite among the newborn and provide that chick with 80 per cent of the food it collects. Its siblings have to fight for the other 20 per cent. So, next time your parent says "I don't have a favourite, I love you all equally" remember the coot, the brutal, brutal coot.
