Pied-billed Grebe
This bird was far from shore when I first noticed it, and I thought that it was a small duck at first. It turned out to be a Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps), another species I have never seen before. It is a diving bird that can stay underwater and swim a considerable distance before resurfacing. That made it fascinating to watch, but very difficult to photograph.
