Memento

One of my favourite mugs is this one as it depicts Denman College. Until recently this lovely Georgian building was home to the educational college of the WI. It was opened in the 1940s and until recently provided lecture courses, craft courses and courses on music, drama, cookery and so much more. I was fortunate to attend very many times, mostly on craft courses, but also history subjects, and training courses. Denman had a unique atmosphere of fellowship and learning together and it was always a happy experience. The bedrooms were all furnished by different county federations and we’re full of crafts.
Sadly Denman was no longer able to pay its way and the building was put on the market. It has taken a long time to sell, but we have been informed that it has recently been sold to a member of the family for whom it had been a family home over very many years. A happy outcome for this wonderful place.
The WI will continue to educate members. At the moment Zoom courses are proving popular but I guess residential courses will be provided before long.
Meanwhile I will enjoy tea in my Denman mug.
