We had an open day at the school, attended by thousands, for games, demonstrations, displays and lunch... it went on for hours and hours, certainly longer than I would expect any school fete to last, and once the DJ from the local English-language radio station (Babylon FM) shut up with his Justin Bieber playlists, we had Kurdish dancing under our central tent thingy, though it was just the senior students who got up. They move around the edge of whatever space there is and the line gets longer until it joins into a circle (at weddings, for instance). Men and women dance together, the leader swinging a hanky or his beads. Apparently at Newroz there was a world-record-setting circle.
This is the start of the line. Senior boys looking pretty sharp in traditional gear. Needless to say they don't dress like this for school.
