Gunnersbury House
Looking up to the Rothschild House...now a museum.
They owned the estate for many years putting on lavish events for 18th century nobility. The kitchens are a a wonder of Victorian domestic design. Very much upstairs /downstairs except in this case they were next door rather than downstairs...as were the servants quarters. When the Liberal Government brought in National Insurance....the Rothschilds agreed to pay the employer contribution so long as the servants took out health insurance....this is pre world war 1 ..so no NHS. Although they were paternalistic employers apparently this was a good deal by contemporary standards.
The head chef was paid the same as the head chef at The Savoy.
