The Tollboth Steeple

This fine building has recently be denuded of its scaffolding, and is looking lovely. It was built in the late eighteenth century to replace the medieval tollboth. The adjacent court house staged the trial of Patrick Sellar, in 1816, in connection with his role in the Highland Clearances. Sellar was aquitted, but guilty seen as in the eyes of the people. The clan chiefs, who were really behind the Clearances, were not put on trial.
