Maneru, Navarre
Puente La Reine to Estella, day 5
I left the storks behind and after a deliciously unhealthy breakfast at the café next door to my Pension I set out for stage 5 of the Camino, less climbing up and down than yesterday and about the same distance, 14 miles and then a bit.
I lapped up the morning miles and fell in again with K from Belfast, we had lunch in the market square Lorca, a jambon sandwich and a shared bar of chocolate. We bemoaned the lack of enterprise in the quiet village where there was clearly a market for hungry pilgrims. No more than 200 meters along The Way from the square was a thriving Albergue selling hot food, soup and even some vegetarian options. K had a second lunch and I carried on.
It was a couple of degrees cooler today, top temperature 27, and the afternoon miles beside vineyards, olive trees, and barley splattered with poppies felt long, but easier than yesterday.
My accommodation for the night in Estelle is a mile or more outside of town which added to today’s distance, the compensation being that I have a head start in the morning. It’s a busy industrial town with a medieval centre which I am too tired to fully explore. A picnic supper from the supermarket close by – Navarre ham, strawberries and 2 custard pastries.
The blip is Maneru, one of the three hilltop villages we climbed and walked through before descending into Estella.
