Falkirk Wheel.

This is a fabulous engineering project that was a Millennium project. It was opened by the Queen on 24th of May 2002. It is a canal boat lift that joins the Union canal (that goes to Edinburgh) with the Fourth and Clyde canal, ( that goes to Glasgow). This enables a canal boat to travel from one side of Scotland to the other. The design was inspired by a sharks backbone and has been likened to a celtic axe. It works by rotating and the boat gradually is lifted from the bottom to the top and vica versa. Each lift uses only enough electricity to boil a kettle 8 times.
