Sally Mair - Loving life

Up and away!

Today was an up day!
The forecast had been poor but in fact the sun was shining when we got up so we decided to try out the new cable car up Babadag. It goes up to 1200 metres (just less than the height of Ben Nevis) . There will be two stations above that at 1700 and 1900 but they are not ready yet. 1900metres is the point I did my paraglide from in 2019. The shots are mainly taken on the way up and from the restaurant at the top. Unlike at home where such a place would be used to extract the maximum from tourists, the prices were no higher than in town and the views sensational. They've also built an amphitheatre up there for performances. The thumbnail is of one of the beaches in the Blue Lagoon where we were swimming last week.
Back down at ground level we took a dolmus to Fethiye. We wanted to pick up some things for souvenirs and to go back to our favourite daytime restaurant in the old Market. It's called the Duck Pond and today, as well as the adult ducks, the terrapin and the large fish, there were seven extremely cute ducklings. See second extra.
The first extra is of our other'up' today, no cable car this time we slogged it, in the midday heat, from sea level up through wonderful, narrow, twisting streets at the start of the Lycian Way. We went to visit the rock tombs to the back of Fethiye. Entry was 15TL, around 75p! We climbed up a steep flight of steps in full sun. The steps culminated in a scramble over rocks which I found rather tricky as I've hurt my right wrist and couldn't put any weight on it. Fortunately nobody was taking pictures as it was rather undignified! The main tomb, that of Amyntas is set apart from the others and is fantastically carved with what appear to be strong wooden or metal doors but which are in fact also carved from the rock face. There are several tombs in the area which you can reach and which are believed to date from the 4th century BC. Quite fascinating and well worth a visit they are rather out of the way though and many people don't find them. The views across Fethiye Bay are fantastic.
