Flower Friday 20_2022 :: FF20_2022 :: Geums
Matilda’s Meanders: a full on day with full on weather and you can imagine the hell these brave soldiers went through.
My Flower Friday offerings are geums and lupins beside the grave of an unknown soldier at Essex Farm Cemetery, which is where Lieutenant-Coronal McCrae wrote ‘In Flanders Fields’ in 1915.
‘In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row…’
I have added an AvgCamPro image of some poppies found outside a house in Ypres. There have been very few poppies to be seen this year.
The obelisk in the background is for the West Riding Division.
We also visited Langemark where the German war dead are buried, a starkly different approach to the CWGC.
We went on in the pouring rain to the ‘Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917’ then onto Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth cemetery in Belgium. Only as we left there did the rain stop. It has been a long day, tomorrow we are homeward bound.
