The cruelty of nature

Recent days have seen an increase in activity from the blackbirds.. I thought they were enjoying a good crop of worms from the lawn. I was wrong. They paddle about at the edge of the pond, grab a newt and bring it to the lawn to beak up in to digestible sized pieces.  I only realised when a male blackbird tried to muscle in, which seemed odd if worms were in such abundance. Such dangers further down the food chain!
