Evening light in Nyngan

This is about as busy as it gets in Nyngan. This is a town of approx 2000 in the middle of NSW, 362 km from home.

We were almost ready to leave home yesterday when the automatic caravan movers decided to play up. The van needed turning to attach to the tow vehicle but alas it wasn’t happening. After 4 hours we decided to give up and leave today which meant we missed staying at MsPeahen’s place overnight. Bob used an alternative way of turning the van and no harm was done. We visited Sally for morning tea instead.

We decided to travel onto Nyngan for the night and as we didn’t have fixed bookings were able to adjust our plans.

Nyngan is a farming centre named after the Aboriginal word for long water (maybe ….it’s a bit confusing with these traditional names) and was first established by colonials in 1835. One of its most memorable events was a flood in 1990 when the whole town was under water and all the residents were evacuated by helicopter. Bob was a volunteer trying to save the levee and then helping with the evacuation. I was living in Dubbo at the time and assisted the residents when they were transported to safety. We had a couple of families stay with us until they could get other accommodation before returning for a massive cleanup.

Another interesting thing I read was the large power station built here which has 1.36 million solar panels.

Tomorrow we head further west to Wilcannia.
