The strange looking moth on the gate is a Nut-tree Tussock with the feathered antennae which proves it to be a male.   Apparently it is fairly widespread although less so in Scotland.  I looked without success, on some nearby silver birch and beech trees for caterpillars because they feed on these as well as hazel and trees with nuts
