Laburnum

There is no doubt that the Laburnum Arch is one of Bodnant’s iconic images. In a beautiful garden that has something wonderful to offer throughout the year, late May or early June sees a frantic increase in activity. Opening hours are extended, booking systems are introduced, all so that as many people as possible can make their pilgrimage to see the brief flowering of this iconic feature.

We book for the first slot this morning - it’s one of the few available, and it fits in with our busy schedule, so at 9am we’re literally the first to step into the arch - though in fairness, there’s a cat already there, casually strolling through the golden tunnel. So, here we are; the first in an ever-lengthening steam of people who will queue to get their chance to photograph this icon. I have the perfect viewpoint; the whole arch, people-free. And it is stunning.

But here’s the rub: it’s just another photo of the arch. Would it be more interesting with people interacting? Would a different angle work more effectively? But how else can I show the magnificence of the rich? So in the end I go for the conventional - an alternative in extras.

Of course there’s lot more to see at Bodnant, and in extras there’s a little taster: irises by the Far End pond; bearded irises; and a variety of Bodnant beauties.

Thank so much for the generous comments, stars and hearts for yesterday’s abstract beach shot - all very much appreciated.
