Penniless Porch

After browsing around the extensive Saturday market in Wells, we went on to Cheddar to see a friend of ours, having lunch in the Mendip hills and catching up on each other's news.
Returning to our delightful hotel, I went for a brisk walk before dinner! This archway from the cathedral green out to the main square is called Penniless Porch - where the poor could shelter for a while.
They were still busy dismantling the stall structures at 6 pm - quite some time after the stall holders themselves had gone home. This happens twice every week !
