Cafeteria Tears
I think in many ways, Western society started to head downhill when we were introduced to coffee-drinking. Before coffee, we'd made our water fit for drinking by fermenting it into ale, and this led to widespread merriment amongst all (apart from serfs, slaves, plague victims, witches, heretics, Jews, Catholics, Protestants, crusade refugees, and most of Wales). After coffee, the only merriment to be had was among lawyers. And they soon slapped a copyright on it.
We introduced some kind of stability with the discovery of tea, but it was never going to be enough in the long term. The bourgeoisie percolated their way to power. Why bother with soup in a cup when you can have a coup in a cup?
