Utrecht 900 years a city
On the 2nd of June in 1122 the emperor Henry V handed out the city rights to the inhabitants of Utrecht and thus this place became the largest city of the Northern Netherlands in the Middle Ages. It wasn't the first town that got its cityrights as in 1061 the town of Stavoren in Friesland got those cityrights as first one, but Utrecht was the 2nd who got those cityrights and became the most powerful and important city of the Northerns Netherlands for centuries.
On these panels the churchtower of Utrecht is shown, from paintings of ages ago. At this moment the Dome, the churchtower is in renovation; already so since 2017 and it's not known how long it will last still. These panels cover the building site around the tower.
It seems that the internet will be cut off today for works in my neighbourhood, so an early blip and actually one I took yesterday when in Utrecht.
Some Wikipedia info on "City Rights":
"From the Middle Ages, various places in the present Netherlands were given city rights. These were granted by the landlords; such as counts, dukes and bishops. The new cities were given special rights and privileges in exchange for loyalty to the ruler. This could concern, for example, the right to self-government or its own administration of justice, but also, for example, the right to build a city wall or to organize weekly or annual markets. Many cities were also given the right to mint their own currency or levy tolls. "
