Jubilee

Today is the first day of the 4-day holiday to mark the Queens Jubilee.  St Albans was in full street party mode.

The main street (St Peter's Street) through the centre of town was closed to traffic (which must be creating some interesting diversions, including to many bus routes), and the road was covered with tables and benches, food and drink stalls representing many nations and styles, some of the regular market stalls, and hundreds of people.  There were games and entertainment areas for children, a large stage with a series of performers throughout the day, a second performance area, a policeman wearing a 1952 style uniform (as would have been worn in the year of the Queen's accession to the throne), a man dressed in mayor's outfit (probably the mayor!), a town crier and lots of union flags being waved.

There was also a very tall couple dressed in Union Jack outfits. I think their height may have been something to do with their stilts.

It was a tremendously happy atmosphere, helped by the bright, warm weather. The weather forecast for the weekend is not looking so good.
