Roses have been highly prized for centuries because of their beautiful and fragrant flowers.  The Greek poet Sappho called the rose the queen of flowers.  To meet the needs of the discerning public, rose growers in the 19th century constantly experimented with crossing and grafting roses from different origins.  The number of rose varieties has now risen to more than 20,000.
