Still no bunting
Yes, another late start after a late night. It took a long time to get to the starting point of today’s walk due to closed roads, and inability to find a parking space once we got to the right area. It was :: cough :: close to 1 o’clock before we set off on a truncated walk owing to not parking in the right place.
The weather was amazing though, and as you can see the scene was idyllic. A much easier and shorter walk than yesterday’s. 5.5 km, 99 metres of climbing, 1 hour 17 minutes of actual walking. All the climbing was in one place and, handily, there was a pub at the top :) Then it was a quick downhill to the car, where we realised we hadn’t yet eaten our sandwiches. So we sat on a bench by the river with two friendly ducks to eat them (note to TickyTocky: it was K’s bench).
We returned via Hathersage to visit the David Mellor cutlery factory. His name rang a bell for me because he had a very posh kitchen shop in Chelsea in the 1970s. Not that I could afford to buy anything there. What I didn’t know was that a) he was from Sheffield, and b) he was a renowned cutlery designer. But he also designed a whole bunch of unrelated things. Including Pelican crossings (the ones with a button to press to cross the road), bus shelters, litter bins, bollards, and an oblong postbox that never took off. See extra. Having no room in my luggage I was very restrained in the online shop, while Bundle bought another mug to add to her collection.
Back home we did a bit of dinner prep and then headed up to the roof terrace with glasses of wine and a tapa concocted by me of left-over sea bass, chives, dill, capers, mayonnaise, lemon juice and pul biber, served on toast left over from breakfast. It was lovely up there. Glorious views over my leafy birthplace in golden evening light. Then back downstairs for pasta with a delicious and very Italian sauce made by Bundle from the remains of last night’s stew. Followed by a cheese course of the goat’s cheese I bought from the farm shop in Castleton yesterday. It was excellent, I highly recommend Peak District Dairy if you should come across it.
And so to bed!
