Rosefield Mills

Today's the day ....................... for potential

These once lovely buildings, looking a bit like the Doge’s Palace in Venice, are the Rosefield Mills on the banks of the River Nith in Dumfries.  They were opened in 1885 by Charteris Spence & Co and became the largest tweed mills in the town. Tweed production ceased around the 1930s and the mill buildings were adapted to other uses - but have been decaying for many years.

In 2017, Dumfries Historic Building Trust, with support from Dumfries & Galloway Council began to explore options for its restoration and carried out a public consultation on possible re-uses of the building.  A fund-raising campaignbegan and in 2018 the most prominent and significant of the former mill buildings were acquired by the Trust.

But, here we are in 2022 and it still seems to be in a somewhat derelict state.  It's on a large 10 acre site, pretty much in the centre of Dumfries and its potential for enriching the amenities of the town would seem to be huge ................
