Memorial
Rural Mississippi is dotted with old churches with cemeteries attached. Many, like this one, date to the mid 1800’s. This is Mt. Airy Methodist Church. Every year, we have a memorial Sunday where the families associated with the cemetery gather. Today was that day. Family from both sides of Johnny’s family are buried here, as are Matt, Evangeline, and Lincoln. Johnny’s great grandparents who built the house we live in are buried here. Lots of history. When I was young, I did not understand my mother in law’s attachment to this place. I understand it a little better now. It’s a peaceful place. And while we know our relatives are not here, it is a place of connection to history.
When I was a little girl, one of my very best friends was way into her 80’s. I will never forget her. “Miss Rosie”. Little did I know then that I would actually marry into her extended family. My husband and youngest son share her birthday as well as her bloodline. Her earthly remains are here as well. Connection. History. That’s what makes this place special.. It wasn’t a sad day at all.
I’m pleased to report Johnny’s uncle was sent home this morning with boots on each leg and a wheelchair. Surgery for the ankle is being scheduled. And, Bella does not seem to be in pain. We are just watching her closely and trying to keep her from exerting and reinjuring her neck. Thank you for the thoughts and prayers yesterday Be blessed!
