Four-spotted Chaser
Day #7 of #30dayswild was spent recording grassland quadrats at Castor Hanglands NNR. How wonderful it was to be down among the flowers, with the constant background hum of insects overhead, the gentle chirping of Common Green Grasshoppers (which are actually very local round Peterborough) and brief refrains of Nightingale song in the distance. Once again, there were plenty of orchids, but many of the individuals in this hybrid swarm are very challenging to try and identify! It was really quite hot by late afternoon - perfect for sitting awhile by the pond to watch the dragon and damselflies, including a particularly territorial Four-spotted Chaser.
