Old Doorway...
...it is in fact a very old doorway dated back to the early 11th century, so pre-conquest.
We made our way to Sturmer just over the border in Essex to visit the little garden centre there. We needed a few bits and didn't fancy a trip to Scotsdales, we got what we needed in a much less busy centre.
Just up the lane is St Mary's Church which has been there since Saxon times, sadly closed so we couldn't get in to see the hammer-beam roof. Part of Pevsner's description of the church: "A C11 nave, the only evidence of which is the un-rebated N doorway with a lintel decorated with a chequer pattern." The doorway has long since been walled up but it survives and has weathered quite well.
