Soaking up the heat
While pigeons and blackbirds like settling on a small section of artifical grass that nicely warms their tummies, the greenbottles favour landing repeatedly on stepping stones that cross the real grass lawn. They glow in sunlight. At first I thought they were beetles, they were so shiny. It wasn't until I managed to capture one on camera that I recognised it as a common greenbottle (Lucilia sericata).
Apparently, they will lay around 1000 eggs at a sitting, so no wonder I see so many and find myself singing, Ten greenbottles soaking up the sun ...
