Pica Pica
We’re home.
It’s always nice to get back to home comforts and never more so than this time.
We’ve had an absolutely amazing trip and can’t grumble about the hotel, staff or weather in any way at all.
But……I’ve still got the trots and in addition to that, seabathers eruption!
Google is great for diagnosing (especially when you can’t see your GP for love nor money).
Seemingly, seabathers eruption is common in the waters around Cancun and is caused by the larvae of the thimble jellyfish.
These are invisible to the naked eye and float near the surface of the water, which is why snorkelers are usually worst affected.
What happens is that they get caught in loose fitting clothing (shorts in my case) and then they get agitated and release a toxin which causes a sting-like reaction.
So since my snorkelling session on Saturday, these have progressively appeared from hip to ankle and along my arms. They’re itchy as hell; ‘pica pica’ is the local term which means ‘itchy itchy’.
We took a trip to the pharmacy last night and he recommended Piriton and hydrocortisone, both of which have helped massively.
Far from this being a ‘woe is me’ post, I’m hoping it will protect any of you going to the Caribbean (or Florida coast) from the same fate. Forewarned is forearmed ;-)
