Eden Camp
We revisited this amazing open air museum, dedicated to keep alive the memories of both world wars, and others, and recognise those who served. Last here in 2003 on recommendation of mum and dad who had visited on one of their many touring holidays. We were not disappointed then, and it was even better this time. Not having very small children now meant we could read the exhibits, although even then we only read a tiny percentage of what was displayed. All it has done is ignite my desire to find out more about my own and Jon's families who served through the wars. It really is impossible to describe it in words, but if you have a vague interest, or even if you don't (Jon is more in that camp) I urge you to go. I'll give a brief overview and you can Google the rest!
So in 1942 the series of huts were built to house prisoners of war. Italian POWs built it, but were only there until 1943 when it then became a camp for 1000 German POWs. Eventually they were released/sent back home in 1948 and it became unused until a rich man had an idea to convert it into the museum it is now, following a visit from one of the former Italien POWs who asked if he could look around. (There had, until his visit, been plans to build a crisp factory on the site). So the museum is within a series of huts, each covering a different aspect of the war, with other conflicts also covered.
A great day. I'm like my dad where the war is concerned, although have none of the knowledge. He knew it all! The photo of the writing is a snapshot of the National Service info as a nod to him; the handmade land army girl for mum, whose own mum was in the land army in WW1. There were lots of exhibits with things I could relate to, and lots of items I have in my glass cabinets!
We arrived at 10.20, had coffee and lunch, and left at 4.30. A very full day!
Now sitting in the sun digesting the heavy soya based chilli I cooked for dinner. Not great, but more than our rations, so we are not complaining! Now to plan where we go tomorrow - we think it will be Beverley!
